Andrew Engelson is an award-winning freelance journalist and editor with a passion for narrative journalism. In a career spanning more than twenty years, he's covered a wide range of topics, from the environment and climate science to social justice and LGBTQ issues. His work has appeared at Crosscut, Hakai magazine, Investigate West, Columbia Insight, PubliCola, The Urbanist, High Country News, The Stranger, and many other publications. He lives in Seattle and can often be found hiking or skate skiing in the Cascade and Olympic mountains.

Fentanyl’s Fatal Fallout

Seattle is in the midst of a fentanyl crisis, a drug 50 times more potent than heroin. Used with other drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine, it can be deadly even in small doses. In 2022 there were 310 overdose deaths in Seattle, more than half of those from fentanyl. We’re joined by experts on the front lines of this effort to hear what can be done to address this issue.
