A special live edition of the weekly Crosscut Talks podcast, taped on October 28th, 2020. Crosscut Manager Editor, Mark Baumgarten talks with Pulitzer Prize-winning authors NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF and SHERYL WuDUNN about their book, Tightrope, an exploration of the crisis of working-class, rural America. We consider what impact the Trump presidency has had on the subjects in their story, the state of our disunion, and look ahead to the possible outcomes in the upcoming general election. After this discussion we are joined by a panel of our region's top journalists, including Marcus Harrison Green and Monica Guzman, to break down issues impacting us here at home.
About the speakers:
Mark Baumgarten (host) is the managing editor at Crosscut where he oversees a newsroom of dedicated reporters, producers and editors telling the stories of Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. He is also the host of the Crosscut Talks podcast and the story editor for This Changes Everything.
Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, the first husband and wife to share a Pulitzer Prize for journalism, have coauthored four previous books: A Path Appears, Half the Sky, Thunder from the East, and China Wakes. They were awarded a Pulitzer in 1990 for their coverage of China, as well as the 2009 Dayton Literary Peace Prize for Lifetime Achievement. Now an op-ed columnist for The New York Times, Kristof was previously bureau chief in Hong Kong, Beijing, and Tokyo. He won his second Pulitzer in 2006 for his columns on Darfur. WuDunn worked at the Times as a business editor and foreign correspondent in Tokyo and Beijing, and now works in finance and consulting. They live near New York City.
Marcus Harrison Green is the founder and publisher of the South Seattle Emerald, a columnist for the Seattle Times, a former Reporting Fellow with YES! Magazine, a past board member of the Western Washington Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and a recipient of Crosscut’s Courage Award for Culture. Growing up in South Seattle, he experienced first-hand the neglect of news coverage in the area by local media, which taught him the value of narratives. After an unfulfilling stint working for a Los Angeles based hedge-fund in his twenties, Marcus returned to his community determined to tell its true story, which led him to start the South Seattle Emerald, and eventually move on to cover the area as a reporter for the Seattle Times. He was named one of Seattle's most influential people by Seattle Magazine in 2016.
Mónica Guzmán is the host of Northwest Newsmakers series. She is the cofounder of The Evergrey, is a recent fellow at the Henry M. Jackson Foundation and Harvard's Nieman Foundation for Journalism, and is a former columnist at The Seattle Times and GeekWire. She is currently an advisor to Braver Angels, and the author of an upcoming guide to staying curious in divided times. She lives in Seattle with her husband, Jason, and two kids.
