It’s Super Bowl weekend, and even if you don’t care about the big game, you can still get a cheap doughnut out of it! If you’re not into — or pretending to be into — football, I’ve got some things for you too.
The Princess Power Hour
West of Lenin, Fri. 1/31, Fri. 2/7, and Fri. 2/14, $10 advance
Sketch comedy group Princess will be headlining its first show, with a different opening act each night, at Fremont's West of Lenin. The work of these four guys — the spindly, loud, loveable one is my friend Taylor — has all the elements of truly brilliant sketch comedy (think SNL): unafraid absurdity, surprise and a tinge of darkness. My favorite part? Their appeal spans generations, friend groups and senses of humor, reaching out to even the corniest and most bizarre.
Blue Friday
Top Pot Doughnuts, Fri. 1/31, 99 cents
Delectable Top Pot doughnuts, covered in blue, green and silver sprinkles, will be available at Top Pots across the city for 99 cents all day, or as long as supplies last. Just say “Go Hawks!” to get one. THIS is something I can get behind. Now all we need is for REI to give out some free tents.

Oscar Nominated Short Films
Harvard Exit Theatre, Starts Fri. 1/31, $10.50 general
For two weeks only, see all the short films nominated for this year's Oscars: five in the Live Action category, five for Animation. There are many things to love about this format: the short length allows you to see a handful of films in the time it would usually take to see one; they come from all around the world; AND there’s something magical and intimate about each one.
International District, Sat. 2/1 from 11 a.m. -4 p.m., FREE
The ID throws its annual Lunar New Year (aka Chinese New Year) festival, with dances and performances all day, including one performance by the enticing Filipino Drill Team. The real star, however, is the food. Coming from Vietnam, China, Cambodia and beyond, each menu item is only $2, so you can try everything and still go home with money in your pocket. Crab Rangoon, potstickers, panang curry. For only $2!
First Free Saturday
Seattle Asian Art Museum, Sat. 2/1, FREE
I didn’t know First Free Saturdays were a thing previously, but I can most definitely get behind this (even if it’s not a repeat affair). Celebrate the Year of the Horse with live music and the chance to explore Seattle Asian Art Museum’s galleries for free.
Super Bowl Parties
All around the town, Sun. 2/2, Kick Off at 3:30, FREE
Perhaps you never cared before. Perhaps you want to eat snacks and drink with others (you’re only human). Perhaps your friends don’t have TVs. Whatever your reason for going out on Super Bowl Sunday, here’s a list of Capitol Hill bars that will be showing the game. Get there early to snag a good seat and bask in the camaraderie. Go Hawks!
Sasquatch Launch Party with Cold War Kids, St. Lucia, and members of The Cave Singers
The Neptune, Mon. 2/3 at 8 p.m., FREE (but it’s complicated)
So, IF you’re able to get tickets to this event, it’s going to be awesome. Free tickets will be available in advance at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Neptune box office. There’s only a limited number though, and I'm sure I’m not the only one thrilled at the idea of getting to see these three stellar indie rock acts for nothing. So get there early. Here’s my favorite Cold War Kids song to inspire you.
What are you doing this weekend? Let us know in the comments area below. And if you hear of any interesting – under $15 - events in or around our grand city, please email editor@crosscut.com.
