More outdoor movies, a couple of festivals on the hill, and the final KEXP concert. It’s the final week for a lot of great summer series, including most of the outdoor movies series, so enjoy them while you can.
Romeo and Juliet and other Summer at SAM events
Olympic Sculpture Park, Thurs. & Fri. at 7 p.m. and Sat., 8/24 at 2 p.m., FREE
Summer at SAM events continue at the Olympic Sculpture Park! This Thursday, the Sculpture Park will be the stage for Seattle Shakespeare Company’s production of Romeo and Juliet. In addition, get acquainted with the park by taking a tour with a local member of the arts community and refuel at local food trucks (this week, mighty pig Maximus Minimus!). Saturday brings free yoga as usual, and a crafting-with-found-objects workshop. Full schedule here.
KEXP Concert at the Mural: Decibel Festival Preview
Seattle Center Mural, Fri. 8/23 at 5:30 p.m., FREE
It’s with great sadness that I recommend the final KEXP Concert at the Mural this year. Luckily, it’s going to be an awesome one. This final show is a preview of Decibel Festival, which is dedicated to live electronic music performance. You have to wait until September 25th for the actual festival. But on Friday you can see one-man synth/hip hop experience Vox Mod, plus Portland vocalist/composer Natasha Kmeto and Seattle ambient musician Lusine.
Seattle Bike-In
Cal Anderson Park, Sat. 8/24 from 5 p.m. on, FREE
Now in its eighth year, this “celebration of green transportation, our urban community and summer nights” is sponsored by a multitude of great organizations and businesses. Peddle over at 5 p.m. to join in the festivities, which feature a raffle, a live set by Tacoma post-rock band Lo’ There Do I See My Brother and Capitol Hill Sustainability Walks. Celebrate one of bicycling true heroes (the other one that comes to mind is battling some doping charges) by taking in Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, which starts at dusk. The best part? You won’t have to worry about your bike what-so-ever because it will be valet parked — courtesy of Bike Works.
Linda’s Fest
Behind Linda’s Tavern, Sat. 8/24 from 5-10 p.m., FREE (plus drink and food specials for purchase)
The lovably grubbiest of Linda Derschang’s many successful joints, Linda’s is always great for a late happy hour (7-9 p.m. every day) and some patio chats. With Linda Fest, now in its fourth year, see a smattering of awesome bands, all with no cover. Constant Lovers and Katie Kate will be there, and popular post-punk rock band Absolute Monarchs will play their last show.
Les Misérables
Seattle Center Mural, Sat. 8/24 at 9 p.m., FREE
If like me, you’ve managed not to see the big budget movie version of Les Mis, now is your chance. Love to hate Anne Hathaway (on the big screen), hate to love musicals and just love LOVE the seemingly unlimited talents of Hugh Jackman.
Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings
Hing Hay Park (International District), Sat.8/24 at 7 p.m., FREE
This final installment of the Seattle Asian American Film Festival portrays the life of ukelele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro. The documentary premiered on PBS in May and follows Shimbukuro, whose skills and innovation have helped shape the potential of this instrument, as he tours.
Free Yoga in the Park
Cal Anderson Park, Sun. 8/25 at 11 a.m., FREE
The Samarya Yoga Center, an awesome yoga studio dedicated to community wellness, has been hosting yoga in Cal Anderson Park every Sunday for the entire summer and somehow, I just found out about it now. Do yoga in the quickly dwindling hours of sunshine we have left.
Melrose Market Street Festival
Melrose Market, Sun. 8/25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., FREE
Melrose Market on 1531 Melrose Ave in Capitol Hill is home to many great local businesses, including The Calf and the Kid cheese shop, Taylor Shellfish, restaurant Sitka and Spruce, and Rainshadow Meats. All of these great businesses will be represented (and more, including Mamnoon, whose delicious sandwiches I often daydream about) with food specials and alcohol, all benefiting Teen Feed.
