Some of Sub Pop Records' finest will take the stage Saturday night (Dec. 4) to honor the life of a fallen member of the local music community.
The concert, featuring performances by Shabazz Palaces, Vetiver, Fruit Bats, Wolf Eyes, Mudhoney, and others, is the latest in a series of benefits celebrating the life of Andy Kotowicz, who was vice president of sales and marketing for the seminal Seattle music label.
On Oct. 21, Kotowicz was taking his 3-year-old daughter home from daycare when a speeding vehicle collided with his car, which was stopped at a traffic light on 15th Avenue Northwest in Ballard. His daughter survived the crash thanks to a heroic act, but Kotowicz, 37, died three days later from the injuries he suffered. He had worked for 10 years as a talent scout at Sub Pop and as a sales and marketing executive.
The amount of support that has been shown for Kotowicz’s family by local and national music icons shows how much he was loved. There was a public memorial service at Town Hall; Pearl Jam auctioned off an autographed guitar for $12,500 to benefit Kotowicz’s family; and several pieces of rare music and pop-culture memorabilia are currently being auctioned off at the website charitybuzz.com. Auction items range from guitars signed by the Foo Fighters and Muse to a limited-edition Simpsons animation cell and an autographed Conan O’Brien album. All proceeds from that auction as well as Saturday’s show will go directly to the Andy Kotowicz Family Foundation, established to help support Kotowicz’s wife and daughter.
