One of the most adventurous and musically brilliant new organizations in town is Pacific Musicworks, founded by the marvelous lutenist and early-opera director Steven Stubbs. His next program is a stunner, marrying two audiences. One work will be the very early (1624) semi-opera, "Il Combattimento di Tancedi e Clorinda," following up on the company's extraordinary "The Return of Ulysses," by Monteverdi, last year at the Moore.
The other piece on the program is the West Coast premiere of a work by Heiner Goebbels, "Songs of wars I have seen," based on a 1945 book by Gertrude Stein and composed as a theater piece for baroque and modern instruments. Seattle Chamber Players, the town's leading contemporary-music ensemble, will be part of the band and (along with On the Boards) is collaborating on the event. Wow!
