An earlier blog item on America's top philanthropists noted that the usual Northwest big donors, notably Bill and Melinda Gates and Paul Allen, were missing this past year. Turns out Slate had missed Allen's $46 million in gifts last year, putting him 49th on the list (since corrected). A spokesman for Allen notes that the philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder has contributed nearly $1 billion in his lifetime to various charitable causes. The error was apparently caused by Slate's shifting from the Chronicle of Philanthropy lists to a new one, the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy, which had overlooked Allen's gifts for 2007. Still, the only other Northwest person on the list is Phil Knight of Nike, which still makes you wonder about how generous we are being with all our new wealth.
