Seems that some mysterious force has decided to override Oregon's wacky kicker tax that returns money to residents in flush years instead of saving it for statewide needs.
The law allows taxpayers to choose either a direct payback or make an automatic donation to a state school fund. As Tracy Leow of The Statesman Journal in Salem reports:
More than 200 people have filed complaints blaming their tax preparation software for checking a box on their 2006 income tax return that donated their kicker rebate to schools.Oh sure, the TurboTax software is getting the rap here, but those of us who think the kicker tax is a sinfully backward tax policy wonder if there is some greater justice at work.
