The P-I is celebrating its coverage of diacetyl, a butter-flavored chemical additive often found in microwave popcorn and butter-substitutes. The headlines are scary, though the P-I offers this caveat: "The problem in discussing the hazard from exposure to diacetyl is that beyond a handful of animal studies, little research has been done to quantify how much of the chemical it takes to harm humans." But even so, "government indifference to the possible threat posed by breathing diacetyl is epidemic." If this topic this sounds vaguely familiar, that's because litigation about the chemical go back as least as far as 2004. At least one law firm maintains a web site promoting awareness of the issue.
